Woodpak's Environmental Initiatives
At Woodpak we take our commitment to the environment seriously. Our mission is to produce a product that responsibly uses our natural resources. To that end we have three key environmental initiatives:
- Create packaging that people will keep: Wooden packaging is rarely thrown out. It is reused and reused. We hear stories all the time of people who have received a gift in a wooden box and 25 years later the box is still being used.
- Buy responsibly: All wood is not created equally. We make every effort to buy raw materials that meet the criteria set out by the Forest Stewardship Council whose mandate is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially responsible, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Our efforts in this area include purchasing virtually all our wood from small local mills and purchasing almost all residual wood. One of our key suppliers mills Engleman Spruce for guitar tops. Only a small percentage of the total volume of wood milled make the grade for musical instruments. We buy the rest – it makes fantastic boxes.
- Find uses for waste materials: All our solid wood waste is put in a bin labelled "Free Wood" outside our building.
At the end of each work day you will see a line up of people sorting through the bin. The waste bin is especially popular with local teachers who use the small pieces of wood for classroom projects.
In addition, our sawdust waste is sent to a nearby co-generation plant where the waste wood is used to generate heat and power.
